About Us
The Suzuki Academy of Waco (SAOW) adheres to the philosophy of the famous Japanese violin teacher, Dr. Shinichi Suzuki (1898-1998), who believed that every child can develop talent, good character, and a beautiful heart. With guidance from the teacher, and in partnership with the parents, the child is nurtured through his environment to develop high ability. The Suzuki Method is related to how we learn our mother tongue (native language). Through listening, encouragement, practice, memorization, and review, our skills become second nature. The method develops discipline, respect, concentration, musicianship, memory, confidence, sensitivity, perseverance, and many other qualities of good character, which are fundamental for success in school, in professional settings, and in relationships.
At the Suzuki Academy of Waco, we offer instruction in violin, viola, cello, double bass, and guitar to students ages three to eighteen. Each child receives a weekly individual lesson and regular group lessons, which are attended by a parent. The child also participates in programs (concerts) throughout the year. The parent is guided by the teacher to be the “home teacher” during daily practice. As the child progresses and gradually becomes independent with his practicing, parental interest and support remain important aspects of the success of the method. We develop the ear and a solid foundation of playing the instrument before learning to read music, just as we learn to speak before we learn to read. At the Suzuki Academy of Waco, after a student reaches a certain playing level, we offer classes in music reading and theory, as well as chamber music (small ensembles), to further develop musical skills and character. Music reading, theory, and chamber music classes are also offered to non-SAOW students in our community.
Through a positive and encouraging environment, every child develops at his own pace, and every child is respected.

“Any child who is properly trained can develop musical ability, just as all children develop the ability to speak their mother tongue. The potential of every child is unlimited.”
